He acted the same as usual. Set off the daily pranks: dyed a couple of people’s hair, made sure Hakuba sported ridiculous neon green hair, pissed Aoko off enough to have her chase him around with her mop, barely hitting him somewhere which would have given the gene pool a favor. Still, he noticed Aoko staring at him nervously the entire time before he decided to set off his tricks. There was nothing wrong with him at all, is what he would like to say. Everyone who knew Kuroba Kaito was sure that the trickster was lying. Today, after all, is…

“I’m home.” He said, although he knew no one would answer him. His mother was in Las Vegas, but he was expecting a call from her later. He walked silently – hah! Silently?! What a riot! – towards the door to secret room he discovered three years ago. He looked at the portrait before him, a portrait of Kuroba Toichi, his late father. Yes, today is…

He opened the door, like he always did. He was greeted by the sight of Kaitou KID’s secret lair, all the tricks, the boxes of disguises, blueprints, the car, everything. “Hey, dad,” he whispered to the four corners of the room, “I finally found the gem.” He remembers the sound of gunshots, a curse coming from the mouth of a child too young to be saying those words, “Get down, KID!”, the sound of police sirens, and then the footsteps of his police force rushing to the rooftop of the building where he was to make his grand escape, they were coming closer. He had the gem inside his coat pocket, tantei-kun panting, too tired to even stand up, and a knocked out Snake with a soccer ball imprint on his ugly face. Snake’s lackeys were on the next building, all knocked out with sleeping gas. It was finally all over…

“Well? What are you waiting for?!” Tantei-kun had demanded. “Get out of here, you stupid thief!” He was shell-shocked, tantei-kun was letting him go? Before he could comment on this, the detective cut him off, “You found what you’re looking for, right? Then get out of here before I knock you out!” With that, he closed his mouth and nodded, he sent a smile of silent gratitude to the detective before jumping down the building and activating his glider. It was finally the end.

He looked behind him, at the portrait of the original KID this time. He finally fulfilled both his and his father’s wishes. Find Pandora, destroy it. He finally did. “Are you happy, dad?” He asked, a genuine smile on his face. He promised himself that he wouldn’t cry, he wouldn’t break that promise now, even when he was getting sentimental. He really was happy, his father could now rest in peace. The guys that killed his father were all behind bars and would never be leaving, ever. KID’s appearances lessened after that heist, he could never let go of the persona, it had become too much a part of him for Kaito to just let it go. Besides, it was fun playing around his police force, and also…

“So we finally meet, Mr. Magician in the Moonlight.” A face too much like his own greeted him on the rooftop of one of old man Suzuki’s many facilities. He had the night’s prize in his hands and was about to make his escape when that person stepped out from their hiding place and surprised him. “And to whom am I speaking with, Meitantei-san?” He asked his doppelganger, who now had a familiar smirk on his face. “Why don’t you tell me, Kaitou KID-san?” He answered back, and he was holding his left arm near him and— oh god it’s that goddamn watch, shit. He quickly evaded the needle that embedded itself on his cape. He turned back to the guy on the roof, “Tantei-kun…?” He asked, not really believing it was him. But hey, he had that stupid watch on him, and he was sure only tantei-kun could cheat what with gadgets like those. The vicious smirk that answered him was almost enough to make him nervous, almost. “Mind telling me why we’re suddenly the same height and look too much alike?” The guy shrugged, “I would tell you. But if I did, I’d have to kill you.” But he told him anyway. He told him a story about magic pills that de-aged a person instead of killing them, double identities (that he could relate to), and crows that, until a month ago, were deadly and unbeatable. “So, who are you?” He asked tantei-kun after the story was finished, although he had a bit of an idea who he was talking to, “Kudou Shinichi,” he said, “A detective.”

“Can you believe that, dad? Friends! With a detective! Although you wouldn’t be one to talk since apparently you were friends with Shinichi’s dad! Sure, he wasn’t a detective, but he helped the police out too much to be considered one anyway.” He sighed as he finally finished recounting the past events in his life. The room was quiet once more. He looked at the old and folded blueprints that he would never think of using again, the disguises in their boxes, wigs of varying length and color, and cosmetics that would have made any make-up artist cry themselves to sleep. All these stuff, they were his father’s, and then they became his. Now he was free to do whatever he wanted. What now? For the first time, he was confused. What did he need to do now? He had no gems of immortality to look for, no criminal syndicates to bring down. What now? During this day, since the year he heard that his father was murdered, he always vowed to the portrait of his dad that he would one day bring those criminals that killed him to justice, find Pandora, and destroy it. But now that he finally did those, he felt… kind of empty, like he lost all sense of purpose. In a way, he has.

A ring disrupted Kaito’s train of thought, it was his phone. He brought the phone from his jacket pocket and looked at the display name, “新ちゃん~♡” He stared at the name and smiled, pressing the ‘accept’ button. “Hello, Shin-chan?”

A grunt came from the speaker on the other line, “How many times have I told you not to call me that, Kuroba?”

“But it’s a cute nickname for such a cute person~!” He protested as he turned the lights off and hesitantly left the room, staring at the KID garb and all the tricks and blueprints on the tables and the floor, before closing the door. “Shut up, idiot thief,” was the reply he received from the detective.
“So, why did you call all of a sudden, Shin-chan? I know you hate having to call me so I guess it must be important?” He asked as he made his way downstairs. He probably had some ice cream in the fridge that he could chow down on.

“It’s nothing, really. Just that I remembered that today is…” Kaito looked at his phone in surprise. Shinichi actually remembered what day it was today? He had to smile at that, the detective remembered other important dates, but when it was his own birthday, he hadn’t even realized until Kaito surprised him. “Hmmm,” Kaito hummed. “So you were worried about me and that’s why you called?” Shinichi’s swift denial confirmed his thoughts. He closed the refrigerator door and listened to Shinichi as the detective tried to make up an excuse as to why he called. Kaito knew why he did anyway, no matter how much the detective tried to deny it. Really, Shin-chan was too cute, even going so far as to call him on his father’s death anniversary just because he was worried.

“Shin-chan, I’ll be alright, don’t worry! Hey, do you wanna come over for dinner?”
